Night Sky Celestial Bodies

There are a total of 88 distinct constelations on the night sky. At least 48 date back to classical Greece, while some are likely even older.The brightest stars on the night sky are assigned a “Bayer designation" -consisting of a letter of the greck alphabet, followed by the constellation that star iS located in. Even though there are exceptions,the greek letter assignment tends to follow visual brightndss. For instance, Regulus, the brightest star in the constelation Leo, is designated Alpha Lgonis. Denebola, the sccond brightest, is designated Beta Lconis, and so forth.
