The \u2018Painting of Auspicious Cranes\u2019 is a silk-based coloured painting created by Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji. It measures 51 centimetres in height and 138.2 centimetres in width, depicting a flock of cranes soaring and dancing in the sky above the Xuan De Gate of Bianliang, surrounded by auspicious clouds. This artwork not only possesses high artistic value but also carries rich historical and cultural significance. The painting was created in the 11th year of the Zhenghe era (1112), when Emperor Huizong witnessed auspicious clouds and flying cranes on the 16th day of the first lunar month (the Lantern Festival). He interpreted this as a heavenly omen of good fortune and thus created the painting. The composition features 20 cranes soaring through the blue sky and white clouds, each adopting a distinct posture, with two perched on the chimera-shaped roof finials of the Xuan De Gate.
